[ hmm. heine raises his head slightly as they walk downstairs, almost smelling the air, though his steps stay relatively sure. he follows, too, as directed. ]

You go into haunted houses often?

[paracosmic]

[she shoots him a look.]

Sometimes.

[it's her job, sort of. well, technically, ghosts weren't usually her forte. she liked things that were more tangible.

the smell of dust and simply the age of the house bothered her, though she refuses to wrinkle her nose at yet another thing.]

Do you?

Didn't know it was haunted.

[ he motions at his wet clothes by way of explanation. there are so many doors in the building, he starts just opening them basically at random. quality tactics. ]

I didn't think so, either. I just wanted to get out of the rain.

[but, she should have known better. this ... isn't anything she wanted to be doing today.]

Careful.

[she closes each door as he opens them. she leaves a single long vertical mark with her sword to remind them which doors they have gone through. they don't need anything sneaking up on them because of an open door.]

With a sword?

[ looks who's talking...

thankfully someone's sensible, here, because heine's still opening doors mainly at random. so far, all of them lead to mostly empty rooms, occasionally half-furnished ones. that is, until he reaches one of the doors near the end of the hallway.

when he opens that one, he gets a faceful of dust, purplish-green miasma, and a cold feeling running through his entire body.

he shudders. ]

Jesus Christ...

[ staggering back, looking a little unsteady on his feet. that miasma was not good for him. ]

[heine what are you even doing this is not okay you need to close those doors. she tallies each of them, wandering close, but not too close, when heine gets a punch of miasma.]

Are you okay?

[she'll catch him if he falls, but she'd never seen dust colored that way before, which alarmed her. are they going to be able to go into the room while still being able to breathe properly?]

...yeah.

[ if he weren't so pale, she might notice his unhealthy pallor. he shakes his head again, trying to clear it, and clears his throat. ]

Fuck. What was that?

[ he covers his mouth with his arm and leans into the room. it's full of fog or smoke. while it's not green, it's too thick to seem safe to enter. ]

[she takes a few more steps forward, holding her breath and looking into the room.]

I don't know. I've never seen something like that before, especially in just one room.

[whatever it was, it's unnatural. they would need gas masks to go in there, and unless they were about to suddenly appear, they would have to steer clear of the room all together.]

Open a window. The rain will help.

[ he looks back at babydoll, an expression that says if you say so, but he obeys anyway. still covering his mouth with the crook of his elbow, he takes long steps to the other side of the room and puts his back into opening the old, decrepit window.

she was right. the smoke clears somewhat, and heine sticks his head out the window, peering into the distance. ]

It got dark fast.

[paracosmic]

[the only reason she didn't open it herself was that she wanted to see if anything would show itself through the dust. that's the only way they would be able to see it, if at all. sadly, the light wasn't working in their favor and if anything did show up, she didn't see it.

she looks towards heine, expression neutral, though her eyes seem to say thank you for stating the obvious.]

Should we go in?

[ didn't you know, he is the master of conversation. ]

There's not much in here.

[ well, there's some space to explore. behind him the rain continues to pour, almost covering the groan of the floorboards... and perhaps someone groaning nearby. (i haven't watched any horror movies in the past months, don't judge.) ]
