god, he called for rain
[ the shatterdome is too loud, smells of seawater and sweat, and half the time k-science won't even let him stay in the lab, one of the few quiet places in the entire base. but it's home, in some ways, because heine has lived here for more than half of his life.
and that reason is also the reason why he's doing the introductions for the new pilot arriving today. she's not new new, but new to this shatterdome. heine has read her file.
now he's in his fatigues, arms crossed as he waits on the tarmac for her to arrive. there's a lot to go through before her jaeger even arrives. ]

[She turns back to glance at him, adding to clarify:]
Who's the best pilot here?
[A good portion of why she had volunteered to transfer here was because it was a fresh start. She could claw her way out of her family's shadow and be judged on her own merits. As her sister had said to her once, there was no need for a less talented spare.]

[ it takes him a moment to come up with an answer to her other question, though. ]
Depends on what you're judging on. Mihaeroff's the oldest, but he's not the most efficient.
[ that title goes to another pilot. heine, on the other hand, has the longest kill streak, but a record of rather more collateral damage. ]

For a few moments she stood stunned at the noise and bustle, before squaring her shoulders and making her way to what looked like the end of the food line.
Naoto nodded at Heine's assessment, not surprised. Mihaeroff Mihai was a well known name, and his survival record was amazing.]
Usually in these places there's a consensus as to who the best all around pilot is. The one there is to beat.
[She turned back to Rammsteiner, the full weight of her cool gaze on his.]
If not, I'm aiming to be that pilot.
[It might be laughable, considering her rather short and unimpressive record, but she was determined.]

[ heine wouldn't name himself as the best pilot, because he isn't that kind of person, and also because he personally doesn't think it's true. if naoto does ask around, however, she'll find that most people have a great opinion of heine's piloting abilities and a somewhat lower one of his actual personality.
speaking of which, his only response to naoto's declaration of her goal is: ] Join the club. You're not the first one who's wanted to stand above the rest.
no subject
And while she won't say, she's a bit grateful that Rammsteiner has nothing negative to say about such a goal. While it's obvious he's unimpressed, at least there doesn't seem to be any mockery in his retort.]
Has anyone who said that managed?
[It's a somewhat idle question, and she won't be too put out if it's not answered.]

[ having passed on that cheerful message, heine reaches the trays and picks one up. he's not hungry, but walking along without picking out something to eat would make it seem too much like he was just there for fuyumine, which would be... awkward. ]
You're less annoying than most of them so far, though.
[ that might be a compliment? ]
no subject
She picked up a tray as well, trying hard not to wrinkle her nose at some of the stranger looking food, sticking to what she knew.
The second statement made her glance over at the other pilot, not sure how to take that.]
You're not what I expected, either.
[Their personality sections were usually just lists of mental disorders, and Rammsteiner's had stood out even amongst those. But being at this for so long, and since such a young age, Naoto supposed it was to be expected.]
I was warned you might bite.
[It's said dryly, like a joke.]
no subject
he raises his eyebrows slightly. he's read his own psych eval and profile, and he finds them mildly insulting, but he also knows how fucked up he is anyway. ]
Only when provoked.
[ he might snap his teeth, but he's a little more well-behaved than that. ]
no subject
It might be a bit rude, but Naoto typically steered clear of science, lest she get caught up in an hour long enthusiastic lecture about the genetic make up of kaiju, so she headed over to the quietest and most open table available.
Setting her tray down gently, she sat down almost demurely, poking at the food.]
What counts as provocation?
[The question is wary, a bit wry. So far Rammsteiner had not seemed like a bad person, as far as pilots went.]
Are there others here I should be on guard with?
[There were always a few bad apples after all, and Naoto didn't want to start off here badly. Especially not if it risked grounding her.]
no subject
Provocation? I don't know. Being an idiot, I guess.
[ he mumbles most of that, barely taking the utensil out of his mouth before talking and resting his chin on his hand. he's the worst at being a good dinner partner. ]
I guess so. There's some real weirdos around here.
[ heine avoids most of them, himself. ]
There's another guy with a last name like yours.
[ it be exactly like hers, actually. ]
no subject
She paused when Rammsteiner mentioned Magato, her utensil stilling. In some ways, he had more sense than her, to leave their shatterdome to strike out on his own. In others, however, he was completely insane.]
Do you know him?
[She couldn't say they were close or that they had parted on the best of terms, but he was still a relation. Naoto had wondered how he was, and if he was doing well here.]
WELP missing an entire word in that last tag, sorry
[ he knows the name, and some of the rumors, but he doesn't pay too much attention to those. ]
Do you?
[ wait. heine stops picking at his food. ] Are you two related?
no worries. o/ i've probably had a lot of typos too D:
Yes.
[Unfortunately was the loud implication of that one syllable. Hopefully he had learned some restraint or, considering that was highly impossible, she wouldn't be judged too harshly due to his actions.]
But I haven't seen him in years.
[At least she'd already carved her way out of his shadow, and the only threat he was to her was the toll his presence took on her sanity.]
TYPO PARTY
[ heine doesn't like him much, but then again, he doesn't like anyone much. and he hasn't even interacted with magato much yet. ]
What's wrong with him?
the best kind of parties to be honest
And while she might not be very fond or close with him, it feels a bit rude to talk ill of Magato.
She puts her utensil down, stacking up her plates and bowls neatly.]
He is very... [How can she describe it?] forceful and unpredictable. He also has many annoying habits.
[Still, she might be biased, so she forces her shoulders to relax.]
If there's nothing else I should know, I can find my way back to my room to unpack.
no subject
Nothing I can think of.
[ he gets up, giving her a short nod in lieu of any actual words. big as the shatterdome is, they'll be frequenting the same places—the training room, canteen, and jaegar hangar. ]
no subject
I appreciate that you showed me around.
