[ his brother has always been the better child, the one who is stronger and faster and the one meant to rule. but giovanni knows his strengths, and his brother's weaknesses.

so his smile is perfect, something out of the glossy pages of magazines, as he greets hirato in the office. ]

I've heard so many good things about you. [ folds his hands in his lap, gazing through the lenses of his impenetrable sunglasses. ]

[tophat]

[ he's a cheery creature, this man with his distinctive sunglasses, but people who are perfectly happy and well-adjusted don't generally tend to seek him out under these conditions. in spite of his natural curiosity, however, hirato is good at holding himself back.

he mirrors that smile with one so sugary sweet it could possibly cause cavities. ]

I'm glad to hear that. [ he leans in somewhat, a hand settling on the desk. ]

[underhound]

[ he doesn't move away or towards hirato, but he smiles a little wider, just for good measure. ]

I have a picture of my target, here. [ a snapshot of heine, clearly taken at a time when his brother was not aware of the camera. ] And he doesn't live very far from here. Is that enough?

[tophat]

[ hirato gives the picture a brief once-over. there's not really any indication regarding what he thinks about this job, but. ]

I don't suppose you have a general idea of what his daily routine is like? [ it's easier if he can consider all the options. ] If he has any, that is.

[underhound]

Ah, well, there's a slight difficulty in that his occupation is... irregular. And if he's going outside, he's likely armed.

But there are a few places he goes with any regularity.

[tophat]

It would definitely be easier if I were to know places he could be at.

For efficiency's sake.

[underhound]

Of course.

There's the church — the old one that's rather rundown. And the Italian restaurant, Buon Viaggio, though he goes there less often. Those are the two main places in the nicer area, but if you're not opposed to going downtown...

[tophat]

You know Grandmother Liza, of course — ? He goes there to take assignments, usually on Thursdays.

[ he's surprised heine hasn't noticed the people following him yet — or maybe he has, and he's just put his followers down to the multiple other groups he's antagonized. ]

She has her rules, of course, but it'd be easy to find him on his way out. Or in.

I've heard of her rules, yes, but I don't think those will provide a major obstacle.

[ he can't help but be unusually intrigued by this one for some reason. usually the motive is pretty clear-- jealousy or greed or something similar. here, however, there's hardly anything evident. ]

I have to say you seem very well-informed.

[underhound]

We were quite close, once. I know what kind of a person he is.

[ not so long ago, in the grand scheme of things, but the heine he knew lived a lifetime ago. ]

[tophat]

[ that's a bit of a tragedy, isn't it? ]

I see. [ that's all he says to start, leaning back in his seat and crossing his legs idly. ] In that case, I suppose it's of utmost importance that this is tended to quickly.

[underhound]

That would be best.

[ there's a near-hiss to that s, but his smile stays the same as he sits back a little. ]

You can find me here. I'll know once you've finished up.

[ he doubts that anyone can keep a hold on heine for any amount of time. while he wouldn't consider this sending hirato to his death (there's certainly more to him than meets the eye), he doesn't really expect a success.

his face betrays none of that, of course. giovanni only continues to smile, fingers laced in his lap. ]

And how would you prefer your payment?

[tophat]

[ slowly, he rises to his full height. no point in being all slow and lazy, right? ]

Certainly.

[ he wonders if heine will put up much of a fight. will he be difficult to take down or will it be as laughably easy as usual to kill him off? but hirato's smile betrays none of that, of course. ]

I prefer it on card, if that doesn't inconvenience you.

[underhound]

It's no trouble.

[ spreads his hands, and flicks his wrist to gesture at the door. ]

[tophat]

Until later, then.

[ meaningless pleasantries-- but he'll get to work soon enough, he thinks idly, holding the door open for giovanni. will he find out more about this conflict? ]

[ meaningless pleasantries they may be, but giovanni takes the gesture with a smile and slips out the door with a bow of his head. he looks forward to watching when this man meets his brother. ]

[ for a mercenary, heine actually tends to go out at normal times. admittedly, he prefers the dark, but that's because bright lights make his eyes hurt. still: it's a little after midday and he's on his way back from getting groceries, holding a paper bag in one arm as he turns the corner and heads down an alleyway between two dark buildings.

easy to confront, in a narrow passageway, and hard to miss, with his white hair and skin. ]
