THREE. (mashup cyberworld verse i guess?)

[quatrain]

[ entering unfamiliar cyberspace is like walking down a staircase in the dark. each step is made over a distance estimated, unknown except for the faintest outline.

he is plunging through a field of violet, vision encompassing everything unless he focuses clearly on a single area. there isn't anything to focus on just yet, just the usually pinpricks and flashes of light that he doesn't want to move towards. there are irregularities in this area, and as he scans he eventually sees one of them — a flicker with no discernible pattern.

that's important. he moves towards it, magnifying it in his own vision as he gets closer. ]

[phaseshifted]

[the flicker shifts, almost as if it knew it was being looked at. it shrinks, then grows in size until it's the size of a human eye, flickering for a moment longer before it changes in the violet landscape to blue.

(she has been seen, perhaps he will isolate it and consider it the only irregularity if it exposes itself. risk and reward, and she is sizing him up, seeing what she can read off him, if she can find out anything about who he is)]

[quatrain]

[ his cyberspace signature is streamlined but extensive, thousands of buzzes in spots that started out safe but then ventured into the deeper portions, unexplored except for the places that a few other pilots charted out on short expeditions. it's the past of someone who has gone to great risk for great returns, staring abruptly and likely to end just as abruptly if he makes an error.

he's young, curious, and without orders. the flicker of light draws him in and he circles it, eyes wide, leaning closer. ]

[phaseshifted]

[it begins staying constant, only a pulsing glow now, and it rises to his eye level before shifting again, into a single blue eye, transparent and hopefully keeping his attention from what's going on behind him.

(she has made her decision, and so she gathers herself behind him, flickers scattered here and there awakening, forming themselves into her outline. it all hinges on being able to keep that air of mystery she's been working with for so long.)]

[quatrain]

[ strange. it's a human eye. he gazes into it, marking down a few notes on its frequency and level. he doesn't turn around, but he can feel the presence forming behind him. ]

[phaseshifted]

[and once she's together enough, she speaks.]

I wasn't expecting company down here.

[quatrain]

[ he turns around, not too quickly, and smiles. ]

Hi! Sorry for not knocking.

[phaseshifted]

The door was left wide open, there was no need.

[though it's difficult to tell, she's smiling.]

You've come a long way, haven't you?

[quatrain]

Yeah. But it was worth it, I think.

Let me introduce myself — I'm Kopschi, Terminal 18 from BIRD.

Angel. You understand my reluctance to tell you anything more at this time?

[after all, when operating from fields that may or may not be strictly legal, one had to be careful.]

[ hmm. he thinks about it for a second, and then launches into an introduction, talk show host smile and all. ]

Kopschi is part of the scientific name of a subspecies of Japanese deer. That's my assigned name because my dad used to say I looked like a baby deer! Mm, I'm a Virgo, and I like taking long walks on the beach and my ideal first date is lunch in a French bistro. What about you?

[ it's hard to tell if he's joking or not... ]

[phaseshifted]

[she seems to consider for a moment, then-]

I go by Angel because the primary essential value relating to my connection is 4N631, which reads as Angel in some circles. I never put much stock in horoscopes, and as for first dates I'd probably say food at somewhere quiet, nonpretentious, would be best.

[Nearly all of that is lies, but she delivers it like it's truth.]

Do you prefer French or Thai?

...Never had either, to be entirely honest.

[is he legit asking a mystery woman who isn't even showing him her real face out. is he.]

[ look, a young guy working in this field has to take all his opportunities by the horns!!! (he's a fucking douchebag.) ]

Well, not here. [ smiles. ] But I'd treat you in return for a little more of what you can tell me.

[phaseshifted]

[she chuckles, shaking her head a little.]

You don't even know if I'm near the country you're in.

For now, I promise to answer three questions honestly. No more.

[ suddenly (mostly) business: ]

One: what is the Others' goal?

[phaseshifted]

I don't know.

[did anyone? it's not her primary directive, so her knowledge isn't the most extensive.]

[ that's one, but that one was a long shot. he thinks for a moment, and continues. ]

How are you able to get your information?

[phaseshifted]

One network leads to many others. I spend a lot of time travelling around gathering information from the multitude.
