Okay. [ Zuko positions himself so he'll be under the umbrella with her as they leave the shelter of the awning. He's doesn't know what Katara's planning, but as he said, he can work anywhere. ]

So... how was your day?

[ it's said cheerfully, like she's partly poking fun at zuko for forgetting his umbrella.

(she's definitely poking fun at him.) ]

I ran into your sister.

[ Argh, geez, he knows he should've remembered. Zuko deflates marginally before he's distracted by the mention of his sister. ]

Oh. She didn't do anything, did she?

No, I managed to escape relatively unscathed. I think she was sending a freshman to the wrong end of campus.

[ she says it in an exasperated tone. ]

I'm surprised she decided to go to the same school as you.

[ Sounds like classic Azula. Zuko's lucky he hasn't run into her for a whole week. ]

She wouldn't let me being here stop her from getting into the program she wants.

So... are you going to tell me where we're going, or is it a surprise?

But I promise it's not an exciting enough surprise that it'll distract you from homework.

Oh. Okay. [ That makes it sound like a good kind of surprise, not the kind his sister would give him.

But—he doesn't feel like thinking about Azula anymore. Zuko keeps under Katara's umbrella, changing the subject while they walk. ]

Sooo, how was your day?

I'm pretty sure someone was trying to ask me out but they were kind of...

[ she doesn't want to say "bad at it" because that's... rude, but it's also true. katara gestures vaguely. ]

You know.

[ no he doesn't know. ]

[ Zuko really doesn't. He continues to look at Katara, expecting a bit more explanation. Someone asking Katara out isn't that weird, she's cool. But... ]

They were kind of what?

[ Zuko's the opposite of cool. And also very oblivious. ]

[ honestly, she knows he's like this and yet, she still somehow thought she could get through this without further explanation. ]

Okay so, if I came over to you and told you that we were going on a date, what would you do?

[ Despite the hypothetical phrasing of Katara's statement, Zuko's face and ears color redder. ]

Uh... [ If anyone came up to him like that, let alone Katara, Zuko would feel absolutely flustered. And Katara actually knows him, so that's an extra weird thought to have. ]

Ask them why? Depends on who it is. If it were Mai I'd say no, because I don't think that would be a good idea.

[ Starting that kind of relationship with Mai up again is not something Zuko wants to get into right now. ]

[ she... actually has to stop herself from laughing. not at him, but she knows that she wouldn't hear that kind of answer from most people. it's refreshing. ]

Oh. Well, you would handle it a lot better than I did. [ katara isn't the best at getting bossed around. ]

Did you yell at him?

[ Zuko's been on the receiving end of that, and as scary as that was he's smiling at the thought of Katara telling someone (else) off. ]

I wouldn't say I yelled at him, per se.

[ her tone implies that it was still an angry lecture though.

just at, you know, not a yelling volume. ]

Really? But you got rid of him somehow.

[ The yelling is implied by the anger in the lecture, sort of. ]

I'm very good at covincing people to change their minds about things.

[ translation: she's very good at scaring people off.

Oh... yeah. [ Zuko's had some experience with Katara's convincing abilities. And her scaring abilities. ]

You're definitely very good changing people's minds. I would know.

[ she has to bite her lip stop herself from laughing, but she still snorts. ]

But you like it, so it's fine.

Well, it's really impressive how good you are at scaring people without yelling.

[ Does Zuko like it? He's not sure. He thinks it's cool, though! ]

Is that what you did to this person who, um, tried to ask you out?

I guess... if you like someone, you shouldn't just boss them around into going on a date with you, right?

[ she's pure and isn't aware of how far kinks go, let her live. ]

[ Zuko, who has only been in the real world for a few years, is nodding along. ]

You should ask and bring them a present.

[ there's a pause. ]

What kind of present are you thinking?

Like a fruit basket. To show that they're interested.

[ Fruit baskets are great gifts. Fruit's really healthy. ]

If you gave me a fruit basket I'd probably think you were trying to bribe me for something.

[ or that zuko is secretly a forty year old man. ]
